Best known as a creative provocateur and the Gladstone Hotel’s resident artist, Bruno Billio exhibits and lives in an intimate 316-square-foot space, blurring the lines between the man and his work. At Bruno’s last exhibit for the Gladstone’s “Come Up To My Room” event, guests were privy to remnants of the previous night’s dinner party, where plates of chicken bones (and even a broken chair) were splayed out untouched on Bruno’s elegant dining room set.
It’s the juxtaposition of reality and surrealism that strikes you hardest when surveying Bruno’s work. Stacked books, with their spines covered in black tape, have become his trademark. Bruno’s artistic practice is informed by the active displacement and staging of the found object, a contemporary art strategy with an historically established lineage. By de-familiarizing the everyday object, Bruno effectively reinterprets the material and social valence of the object in space. The conventional use of the commodity is literally evacuated when sculpturally monumentalized as installation. Bruno both empties meaning and renews the proscribed object.
At once an installation artist, sculptor, and designer, Bruno’s installations tend towards architecture, revealing structural play and whimsy. He has exhibited internationally in Milan, London, Miami, New York, and Los Angeles.
In addition, De Luca Fine Art | Gallery with The Italian Institute of Culture presents an installation by Bruno Billio, at the Canadian Stage’s
